Harrison-Burr Property
The Harrison-Burr Property is tucked away in Wharton County near Burr, between Wharton and Boling, and encompasses approximately 1500 acres for charitable use.
The property, managed for waterfowl and songbirds, primarily consists of water features including several wetland areas and three large lakes ranging from 27 to 50 acres in size. These lakes are lined by Bald Cypress and Oak trees. One of these lakes serves as a nesting site (Rookery) for a variety of colonial waterbirds. These water features are impounded by levees with water control structures. Other habitats include wooded timber, grassland, open pasture, and row crop.
Our 3 mile bird hike provides ample opportunities to view these variety of habitats. Since the inaugural bird survey in February 2020, the Harrison-Burr Property has become highly requested for birding activities, especially during the winter season as it hosts a wide variety of waterfowl.
We currently host 4 bird surveys on the property throughout the year. A late-winter bird survey to observe late-season waterfowl is conducted in February, a Spring Bird Count in April, a November survey, and the Christmas Bird Count (Wharton Peach Creek). The Harrison-Burr Property has documented 194 different species of birds to date, which can be explored on our eBird checklist.
